Owner's Meetings: Thomas Howard In Limbo

San Francisco Chronicle reporter David White is at the NFL Owner’s meeting in Orlando. There are some interesting tidbits from Head Coach Tom Cable.
 
JaMarcus Russell’s weight is always a hot topic, but how much he weighs is really irrelevant. Sure it might make him more mobile, sure it might indicate he is working harder, but it is out the window without production.
 
Russell didn’t change his throwing motion, per Cable.
 
Kamerion Wimbley will play strong-side linebacker and Cable touted Trevor Scott’s development at weak-side linebacker. Not sure this is good for our run defense.
 
The obvious question is: What about Thomas Howard? There may be an interesting competition at the two OLB spots this summer. Ricky Brown also signed his tender, but he could also be in play at middle linebacker.
 
This also clears the way for Matt Shaughnessey to become the clear starter at defensive end opposite Richard Seymour.
 
Mark Davis and Amy Trask attended the meetings. Al Davis doesn’t travel as well this days and Mark needs to get more involved in the football operations if he is to take the reins someday.
 
The Raiders are in the market for a right tackle, as Khalif Barnes would be the starter with Erik Pears in the conversation as of today. Ugh.
 
Cable said he wants one of Darren McFadden or Michael Bush to be his every down back.
 
When healthy, Darren McFadden is the best bet to win the job, but it could be fun to watch if Bush brings his best to the table.
 
Raiders are very happy with the safety group. This is something I’ve been saying for a while. We can all rule out Taylor Mays now.
 
Nothing here is super surprising, a nice change from the Raiders recent history.

The Raiders aren't who we thought they were....they're better

The Oakland Raiders are tired of being the team that will be good in a year or two. The team expects to win now and it is winning now. We thought the Raiders needed more talent. We thought that being in the playoff hunt was a year away for this team, but we were wrong. This isn't the team we thought they were, they're better. On Sunday, they moved to 3-3 on Sunday with a 37-29 win over the San Diego Chargers that wasn't close until the final minute. It was also the Raiders second road win of the season. The last time the Raiders had two road wins by their sixth game was 2011. Before that, a five-year streak from 1998-2002. The Raiders went 8-8 in 1998, 1999 and 2011 and narrowly missed the playoffs each year.  They made the playoffs in 2000, 2001 and 2002. They didn't have a losing record in any of those seasons because teams that can win on the road are usually pretty good. Oakland Raiders' Studs and Duds From Preseason Week 1

[embed]http://gty.im/484069738[/embed] The Oakland Raiders finally look like a competitive football team again. That should be the biggest takeaway from their preseason rout of the St. Louis Rams. Quarterback Derek Carr and the offense looked significantly improved from a year ago, thanks in large part to some of the studs listed below.
