Al Davis Empties His Diaper and Robs His Own Grave

Javon Walker: 6 years, $55 million, $16 million in Guarantees, $27 million over the first three years.
Kwame Harris: 3 years, $16 million

I don’t like these signings at all. Walker has a history of injury and Harris is a penalty machine. I thought we were trying to avoid penalties? Don’t you always avoid injury prone players?

That said, this is a huge gamble. Walker is talented if healthy. He also has proven he can catch rockets in Green Bay. So maybe he can catch them in Oakland. He has good size and speed, so maybe it is a gamble worth taking. I find it a tough pill to swallow that he is making as much as Randy Moss, but I guess you do what you need to do. I would have rather had the durable Bryant Johnson or the other injury prone WR DJ Hackett, but Walker does fill a hole, so I guess we can’t complain THAT much.

Harris is young and if anyone can do something with him it is Tom Cable. Tom Cable is officially a guru for offensive lineman.

While I don’t want to be doom and gloom on the recent deals, they are the worst deals I’ve seen all off season. It is entirely possible they both pay off, but it is also just as possible we spent the money for a couple of losers.

I’d think we are getting close to the cap now as we are likely to run out of money soon.

That said, we filled some of our biggest holes and we can fill some more in the draft. Its tough to hate the things the Raiders are trying to do even if we as fans disagree with some of them. At this point we have to assume the team knows what its doing. We can take some satisfaction in that we are doing things different than normal, which means at least we aren’t stuck in our same ways as the past five years.

  • Process is highly political. Fringe guys need national exposure or a voter willing to fight the good fight. Harder for West coast guys.

  • I know every team has a guy or two they feel should be in that is fringe candidate at best. Plunkett and Branch a couple Raiders examples.

  • Never been a fan of Hall of Fame selection process. When guys like Ken Stabler, Tom Flores, Don Coryell are kept out, there is a problem.
